BUFFALO — In the first of three road trips of the week, Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat basketball teams swept a doubleheader against Altoona-Midway High Monday.
The Wildcat girls used a press in the fourth quarter to secure a 47-37 win. They were behind 27-25 after three periods of play.
“We had to do something,” said Kent Houk, MVHS girls’ coach. “The girls were patient in the offense and the press got us some quick looks.”
The Wildcat girls outscored the Jet girls 22-10 in the fourth. Maggie Meiwes scored eight of her 17 points in that span. She also had eight rebounds.
Cheyanne Miller had 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
Altoona-Midway got 12 points from Kelsey Spears and 11 points from Nicole LaCrone.
Marmaton Valley’s boys pushed past the Jets 50-43. The teams were tied 27-27 at halftime.
The Wildcats used an 11-7 run in the third period to take the lead. They hit 6 of 13 free throws in a 12-9 surge in the fourth quarter to win.
Zack Louk fired in 16 points for the Wildcats. He also dished out five assists.
Dalton Houk and Cole Becker chipped in 10 points apiece. Becker, Louk and Laond Hammond had seven rebounds each.
The Jets were led by Cody Boles with 12 points.
Marmaton Valley’s squads head to Chetopa tonight in Three Rivers League action. The Wildcats go to Pleasaton on Friday.
Marmaton Valley has another three-game run next week, all at home. The Wildcats will host Uniontown next Monday followed by Lebo on Tuesday and Northeast on Thursday.
That will end the regular season for the Wildcats.
