COTTONWOOD FALLS — The Yates Center golf team was able to accomplish a season-long goal by qualifying for the State Sand-Greens Tournament as a team.
The Wildcats took third overall in Monday’s regional tournament at the Chase County Golf Club in Cottonwood Falls.
Yates Center shot a four-man score of 377, Riley County won the tournament with a 334 and Chase County took second with a 366.
“We knew going in that Chase County and Riley County had some good players and would be tough to beat,” Wildcat coach Kevin Barnes said. “I am very pleased to have been able to have been within 11 strokes of Chase County on their home course.”
Freshman Reece Solander led the charge for the Wildcats by shooting an 80 and taking third individually.
Senior Jon Barnes stood tall for Yates Center with one of his best days of the season and shot a 92 to take 10th.

HUMBOLDT
The Cubs brought four golfers to Monday’s 3A regional tournament in Erie and came away with a state qualifier.
Sophomore Ryan Sellman is now two-for-two in qualifying for the state tournament after he shot an 82 to finish third individually.
Sellman won a playoff hole to earn his bronze medal after tying for third through 18 holes.
Also competing for the Cubs were Roni Bulk — who shot a 125, Drake Hottenstien — who shot a 128, and Reid Smith — who shot a 137.
Sellman will complete in next Monday’s State Tournament at Independence Country Club at 8:30 a.m.
IOLA
The Mustangs and Fillies did not compete in Monday’s 4A regional tournament in Fort Scott.
The lowest score shot this season by any Iola golfer was a 96, so coach L.C. Lacy determined that Iola would forgo the regional tournament.
With the golf season concluded, the team looks forward to next season when they are slated to return the entire team for the second year in a row.
