MORAN — After getting no hits and losing 14-1 in the opener, Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat softball team turned in its best game of the season.

The Wildcats still lost 9-6 to visiting Chetopa High’s Hornets, but…

“It was one of our best executed ballgames, despite facing the best pitcher we’ve seen this year,” said Brenda Mills, MVHS head softball coach. “It was a great team effort.”

Mills pointed out the Wildcats had six stolen bases in the game. And they perfectly executed two hit-and-runs and one double steal.

“We had great bunt coverage and strong infield play,” Mills said of the Wildcat defense.

Marmaton Valley scored five runs in the fourth to go up 5-1. Chetopa rallied with a six-run fifth then added two in the sixth.

Kailey Boyd was the losing pitcher for the Cats, allowing seven hits and walking seven. She had one strikeout.

Boyd hit a triple and a single. Hitting a single apiece were Kaitlyn Ensminger, MaRyiah Cavender, Emily Boyd and Tabitha Ford.

Ensminger and Boyd pitched for Marmaton Valley in the first game. They issued 12 walks and gave up six hits.

Chetopa wiped out a 1-0 Marmaton Valley lead with eight runs in the third. The Hornets scored six more in the fifth for the 14-1 run-ruled victory.

Marmaton Valley’s baseball team won two games by forfeit over Chetopa.

Chetopa was down to eight players, forcing the Hornets to forfeit to Marmaton Valley Thursday and to Uniontown Friday. Chetopa also pulled out of Class 2-1A regional play next week.
