CHETOPA — Marmaton Valley High’s defense did everything but rest Friday.
The Wildcats ended the regular season with a defensive masterpiece, limiting host Chetopa to three field goals in a 46-9 romp.
The win marked the second time in three games Marmaton Valley allowed 10 points or fewer in a game.
Marmaton Valley (12-8) carries a three-game winning streak into the Class 1A-Division I Substate playoffs, which open Thursday at home against Crest (9-10).
The winner moves on to the substate semifinals on March 2 against top-seeded Madison-Hamilton (16-3) at Oswego High School.
If the Wildcats remain this stingy on defense, they will be formidable against any opponent.
Janae Granere scored six points, while Payton Scharff and Tavyn Sutton four each as MV raced to a 16-2 lead after one quarter.
Sutton added six more in the second as the lead swelled to 28-5 by intermission.
Piper Barney got into the act in the third quarter, scoring seven by herself, while the Wildcats held Chetopa scoreless.
The lead stood at 39-5 by the start of the fourth quarter, with the Wildcat reserves playing the balance of the contest.
Granere and Sutton led the way with 10 points each. Barney added nine and Scharff eight.
Nichole Adams scored five to lead Chetopa (1-18).
