MORAN A nightmare third quarter kept what could have been a valuable fifth win away from the Marmaton Valley girls on Tuesday when they fell at home to Northeast Arma, 42-32.
The Lady Vikings came into the game with only three wins one of which came against the Lady Wildcats back on Dec. 4, 36-27 and riding a five-game losing streak.
Marmaton Valley came in fresh off of a loss at Central Heights after earning their fourth win of the season at Altoona Midway last Tuesday. The match-up was fairly even coming in and in three out of four quarters, it showed.
After the first quarter, the Wildcats led by two and at halftime, they trailed by one. Neither team led by more than three heading into the third quarter.
But despite Marmaton Valleys solid defensive effort, Armas shots started to fall. The Lady Vikings hit two shots each in the first two quarters but in the third, nine shots fell, including three threes.
The Lady Wildcats didnt slow down offensively, in fact they had their two best quarters in the second half but it wasnt nearly enough to match the 23 third-quarter points Arma scored.
Marmaton Valley outscored the Lady Vikings in the fourth quarter by five but still found themselves down double-digits when the final buzzer sounded.
Junior Bailey Griffith led the scoring effort for the Marmaton Valley girls, scoring 13 points followed by six for the Ards sophomore Mykayla and freshman Alyson.
The Wildcats will play two more games before this week is over starting on Thursday with a trip to Oswego before returning home on Friday for Winter Homecoming versus Southern Coffey County.
