YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s girls sent the home crowd away in a good mood Friday.
The Wildcats emerged victorious, 38-30, over visiting Southern Coffey County.
Yates Center took the lead for good by limiting the Lady Titans to a single field goal in the second period, and scoring the last four points of the half.
The Wildcats eventually stretched the advantage to double digits down the stretch.
Yates Center’s Cayten Cummings scored the last two buckets of the first half to break the 12-12 tie, starting a 12-3 run capped by Peyton Petit’s free throw midway through the third quarter.
“It was a great team win with everyone contributing to the victory,” Yates Center head coach Kevin Brown said. “Once we took the lead in the second quarter, we played very well both offensively and defensively. Cayten and Kinley really shot the ball well.”
Southern Coffey County’s Karley Ohl scored on back to back buckets to pull the Lady Titans to within 24-19 in the third quarter. But the Wildcats put the game away with an 11-4 run, finished off by a Cummings basket with 1:40 left on the clock.
Kaydence Gunlock and Emily Ludolph pared Yates Center’s lead to 35-27 with a minute left, but Cummings and Morrison went a combined 3 of 4 from the line to seal the win.
Cummings poured in 18 points to lead the way. Morrison wasn’t too far behind with 16.
Ohl led Southern Coffey County with 13 points. Gunlock added 10 and Ludolph seven.
