CHEROKEE — There was only one surprise ending at the 2012 Southeast High Lancer Classic on opening night.

It was provided by Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat boys. The Wildcats, seeded sixth in the tournament, upended third-seeded Oswego High’s Indians 60-55.

Marmaton Valley High’s girls did not fare as well in Tuesday’s tournament play. The Wildcat girls are still without a win this season, falling 57-22 to top-seeded and undefeated Oswego.

The Wildcat boys (3-6) advance to Thursday’s semifinals against Frontenac, a 62-45 winner over St. Paul Tuesday. The game is at 5:30 p.m. in the east gym at Southeast High School.

Marmaton Valley’s girls (0-9) move into the consolation side of the bracket. The Wildcats play St. Paul at 4 p.m. Thursday in the west gym.

Levi Ramsey came off the Wildcat bench to give Marmaton Valley a boost in Tuesday’s contest. Ramsey finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

“Levi played a great game for us,” said Denny Lasley, MVHS boys’ head coach.

The Wildcats had a 23-13 lead by the end of the first quarter but trailed 37-30 by the break. The Cats outscored the Indians 30-18 in the second half.
