HOWARD — Yates Center High’s boys could not replicate on the basketball court what they had done four months earlier on the gridiron.
The Wildcats opened Class 2A substate playoff action on the road at West Elk.
It was at West Elk that the Yates Center football team unseated the Patriots in the opening round of their playoff game in early March.
But on the hardwoods, West Elk prevailed, 59-42.
Tuesday’s loss ends Yates Center’s season with a 4-16 record.
West Elk advances to take on Oxford, which defeated Uniontown, 47-33.
On the other side of the bracket, Oswego defeated Sedan, 53-22, while Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan downed Pleasanton, 70-31.
Substate semifinals will be at Yates Center on Thursday for the 2A girls and Friday for the boys. Championship games are Saturday, with the winners advancing to state starting March 12 in Manhattan.
