MORAN — Being patient on the basketball court pays off. If a team isn’t, well, it may find itself battling into overtime.
Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat boys were patient early Tuesday which afforded them a 24-12 halftime lead.
“But we got impatient offensively in the second half and turned the ball over. Oswego took advantage of that and tied the game up,” said Denny Lasley, MVHS boys’ head coach following the Wildcats’ 45-41 overtime win against Oswego High’s Indians.
The teams were knotted at 39-all at the end of regulation in the first-round game of Marmaton Valley High’s annual Preseason Basketball Tournament.
“We had a three-point lead and the basketball when Derrick Carr sank two free throws to seal the win for us in overtime,” Lasley said. “We played rather well in the first half, correcting a lot of things, but then slipped back into some bad habits in the second half.”
Marmaton Valley committed 32 turnovers. “You’re not suppose to win games when you have that many turnovers,” Lasley said. But the Wildcats shot 55 percent, 17 of 31, from the field and dropped in 10 of 22 free throws. The Indians were 8 of 20 from the free-throw line.
The Wildcat boys (1-1) were led by Jimmy Frye with 12 points and nine rebounds. Nathan Smart had eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Zach Louk made five steals.
Oswego got 11 points from Taq Odham and 10 from Travis Schenker.
Marmaton Valley’s girls were unable to stay with the Oswego High girls in their tournament opener Tuesday. The Indian girls pulled away from the Wildcats for a 47-11 victory.
Oswego held a 31-4 halftime lead. The Indians were led by Jaymie Nesbitt with 14 points, Bricynn Johnson with 12 points and Sydney Pemberton with 11 points.
Marmaton Valley got five points from Kacie Shadden and four from Kaitlin Ensminger.
In other first-round games Tuesday, West Elk High’s girls beat Northeast-Arma 42-36 and Northeast High’s boys decked West Elk 45-28.
On Thursday, the West Elk teams play Oswego and Marmaton Valley’s squads face Northeast in the round-robin event. Then Friday’s action has Oswego against Northeast and Marmaton Valley against West Elk.
