OSWEGO — Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat boys worked an extra inning to win 6-5, then let a seven-run lead get away from them in the second game Thursday, losing 12-11 to host Oswego High’s Indians.
Not much went right for Marmaton Valley High’s softball team in the Three Rivers League doubleheader with Oswego. The Wildcat girls lost 18-3 in three innings and 17-7 in five innings.
On the baseball diamond, the Wildcats held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh in the first game. They retired two Oswego batters then gave up four runs — the last three on a home run — to send the game into extra innings.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the eighth. They held the Indians to just one run in their half of the inning for the win.
Jimmy Frye and Cole Becker pitched for the Wildcats. Frye went 7 1/3 innings and Becker got the win in relief.
Derrick Carr, Becker and Ryan Smith each had two singles. Sage Hall tripled. Taylor Lhuillier and Daylen Houk each had a single.
The Wildcats were up 9-2 after batting in the third. Oswego scored three in the third and four in the fourth to tie it at 9-all. Oswego went on to win 12-11.
“We need to learn to finish ballgames,” said Derek Scharff, Wildcat head coach.
Marmaton Valley used starter Carr, Becker and Frye on the mound in the second game. Carr hit two doubles and Frye had three singles and a double.
Becker and Hall each had a single and a double. Austin Harrison hit two singles.
Oswego’s softball team scored 10 runs in the first inning of the opener Thursday and won 18-3. Marmaton Valley did not have a hit in the game and left the bases loaded twice.
Kaitlin Ensminger and Kailey Boyd pitched for the Wildcats.
Marmaton Valley scored three runs in the first inning of the second game. It led 3-0 until Oswego plated seven runs in the second and seven more in the third on its way to a 17-7 victory.
Tabitha Ford was the Wildcats’ starting pitcher and went two innings. Ensminger and Boyd pitched in relief.
Ensminger, Kacie Shadden and Ford each had a single.
