CHETOPA — Marmaton Valley High’s baseball team chalked up its first wins of the season Tuesday on the road. Marmaton Valley High’s softball team wasn’t as fortunate.
The Wildcat boys defeated Chetopa High’s Hornets 7-3 and 12-11. The wins came in Three Rivers League play so Marmaton Valley is 2-4 in league action and 2-13 overall.
“We played pretty well on both sides of the ball in the first game. We had some big hits with two outs which is something we have lacked all year,” said Derek Scharff, Wildcat head coach.
“We made too many defensive mistakes in the second game but kept fighting and pulled out a close one at the end.”
A four-run second inning helped the Wildcats in the opener. Ethan Ericson got the win as he went five innings, giving up two runs on one hit and six walks. He struck out 11.
Tanner Lewis pitched two innings in relief. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk with one strikeout.
Lewis and Derrick Carr each had two singles in the game. Taylor Lhuillier tripled. Hitting a single each were Ericson, Jimmy Frye, Cole Becker and Gage Stewart.
Down 10-9, the Wildcats scored three runs in the sixth to take the lead. The Hornets attempted to rally and got one run in the bottom of the seventh but Marmaton Valley halted it and won the game.
Lewis came on in relief to pitch the final three innings and get the win. He gave up two runs on one walk and had five strikeouts. Frye, Lhuiller, Becker and Stewart pitched also.
Lewis hit two doubles and a single and  Frye had two singles and a double. Ericson and Nathan Whitcomb had three singles each.
Lhuiller and Carr hit two singles apiece. Autin Harrison and Stewart each had a base hit.
Marmaton Valley’s softball team lost 5-1 and 3-0 to Chetopa Tuesday. Shelby Norman turned in two good pitching performances for the Wildcats.
“We left too many runners on base and we couldn’t get a key hit,” said Brenda Mills, MVHS softball head coach. “We had good defensive play in the second game and only one bobbled grounder in the first game.”
Norman gave up three hits, hit three batters and had five strikeouts in the first game. She allowed four hits and struck out two in the second.
Jamee McEndree, Michelle Heskett  and Cheyanne Miller each had a double. Alysha Westhoff and Kacie Shadden each had a single in the first game.
In the second contest, Westhoff doubled. McEndree, Maggie Meiwes and Haskett each had a single.
