As a high school student, signing day is one that athletes savor. Iola High’s Brady Wiggin never got the opportunity.
Wiggin had a stellar junior season in 2019, batting .500 with a team-high 24 RBIs. After mulling over several offers, Wiggin felt Allen Community College was the right fit for him.
Wiggin was planning for his signing day this spring, but with school canceled due to the spread of COVID-19, his season was canceled along with any sort of ceremony.
“It was pretty upsetting honestly,” he said. “I didn’t know that when I left practice for the last day, it would be the last time that I played for Coach Percy. It was a normal practice on Friday, and coach said be ready for Monday. As it turns out, we don’t have anything.”
With its strong senior class and coach Mark Percy’s final turn at the helm, the Mustangs had high hopes for this season.
Wiggin has no doubts that it would have been one for the memory books.
“Oh yeah, totally,” Wiggin said. “The talent that we had for this program, and still have for this program, is just crazy. I think we had another shot to bring it back home, it is just sad that we will never know.”
With school out, and no baseball, Wiggin is finding the time to work on his swing. Along with improving on the diamond, Wiggin is living his baseball story through “MLB The Show 2020’s” career mode.
“I started a road to the show, dynasty, and all of that,” Wiggin said. “I’m the best player at the show, and that is just how it is.”
