Gold miners are always looking for the mother-lode vein. College coaches are always looking to keep the local talent in the area.
Taylyn Wells is just the latest softball player signed out of Humboldt High School by Allen County Community College. The Humboldt High senior signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play Red Devil softball next year.
“Softball is my favorite sport and coming to Allen County gives me an opportunity to play college softball,” Wells said. “It’s close to home.”
For ACCC head softball coach Ed Wilkerson, the Red Devils have had strong contributions from players coming out of the Lady Cub program. Wells helped lead the Lady Cubs to the Kansas Class 2-1A State Softball Tournament as a junior.
“Taylyn is a good all around athlete with good skills on the softball field,” Wilkerson said of the Wells’ signing. “I’m confident she will develop into a strong player at this level.”
He said Wells will play in the Red Devil infield.
Wells earned Tri-Valley League honorable mention honors as a utility player for Humboldt last year. Wells plays second base for the Lady Cubs.
“I think my defensive play is an asset that I can bring to the ACCC team,” Wells said.
Wells had a .400 batting average for Humboldt last year. She has received TVL honors the past two years and started as a freshman on Humboldt’s Class 2-1A state runner-up team.
“I’m expecting great things from Taylyn and the Lady Cub softball team this spring,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt head coach. “Allen County is a good fit for Taylyn.”
Wells said she is thinking of pursuing a college degree in pediatric physical therapy. She is the daughter of David and Soni Wells of Humboldt.
