War on 54 still on schedule

While area schools will not have classes because of dangerously cold wind chill readings Tuesday morning, the upcoming War on 54 — which features all three Allen County high schools — will begin on schedule later in the day.

Monday’s decision to call off school in Iola Tuesday because of the bitterly cold temperatures will not affect the scheduling for the start of the War on 54 midseason tournament later in the day.

Matt Baumwart, IHS athletic director, said the tournament is still a go.

Forecasts are for temperatures to warm slightly through the day, with temperatures nearing 20 degrees by late afternoon.

However, with the temperature expected to be minus-4, and with wind chill indices projected at about 20 degrees below zero in the morning, school officials said conditions were too hazardous for children to be out and about in those temps.

The tournament games begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Iola High School and Iola Elementary School gymnasiums.

All three Allen County schools, Iola, Humboldt and Marmaton Valley, are a part of the tournament, as well as Crest, Yates Center, Cherryvale and St. Paul.

The tournament is scheduled to continue Thursday and wrap up Friday — weather permitting.
