HS Golf: Iola Mustangs

Iola golf finally had a breakthrough at the Pioneer League meet at Deer Trace Golf Club hosted by Prairie View.

Junior Jeremy Waldman put up the Mustangs’ first top-three finish of the season after shooting an 84 which was good for third.

Waldman prepared for this meet by working on a slice in his drive and he seemed to have found a solution. His drives were straighter and his scores were getting smaller. However, he probably could’ve finished even higher had he not run into other problems with his driver during the meet.

“The head of his driver was loose and he was concerned that if he continued to hit with it, his driver might break so he didn’t hit his driver the rest of his round,” head coach Nick McAnulty said. “After working so hard to fix his slice on his driver I’m sure he was frustrated to have to make that decision, but he did not let this mishap distract him and he put up a good enough score to place third in our league meet.”

Freshman Josh Kaufman shot a 108 and Grant Luedke shot a 133.

The 108 for Kaufman was a season-best.

“Josh played the par-fives well today and parred both of them,” McAnulty said. “But then he struggled with the par-threes today, especially the last couple of holes and that prevented him from putting up a score in the 90s which I think he would have been happy with. Hopefully, he can eliminate a couple of those blowup holes and put up his best score of the season.”

The Mustangs will travel to Anderson County on Monday for the 4A regional tournament.
