November wrapped up fall sports and launched winter’s.

This month’s nominees include four high school athletes and a pair of athletes from Allen Community College. Vote for your picks for athlete of the month on our website, www.iolaregister.com. The poll will remain open until midnight Thursday of next week and we’ll announce the winners the following week.

Holden Barker

Barker was one of the main reasons the Crest football team reached the state quarterfinal round of the playoffs after toppling Norwich in the Lancers’ opening round playoff win. The running back returned from injury near the end of the regular season and played with a cast on his left arm through the playoffs.

Barker led his team with 22 total touchdowns, all coming on the ground as well as on the defensive side with four sacks and 11.4 tackles per game.

Sam Hull

Hull made the final Humboldt football game of the season one to remember after hauling in three touchdown catches and 147 receiving yards in a home playoff quarterfinal loss to Nemaha Central. Hull had quite the junior campaign, catching seven touchdowns and rushing for another score. The Cub also brought in 564 receiving yards.

Hull caught two touchdowns and went for 85 receiving yards in a victory over Cherryvale on Oct. 14 as well. His lone rushing touchdown of the season came against Osage City on Oct. 7.

Chris Dixon

Dixon leads the ACC Red Devils men’s basketball team so far this season with 15.9 points per game while averaging 28.8 minutes per game. It’s safe to say the sophomore has found his stroke from beyond the arc where he is shooting at 39.3% so far.

The guard is also making 50% of his shots from the floor and is tied with three other Devils for most number of games started at nine. Dixon looks to be a threat on the offensive end of the court and somebody Allen will count on to get them back to the national tournament in Danville, Ill., in the spring.

Josie Weers

Weers led her Southern Coffey County High volleyball team to an incredible 30-8 record this season and was just recently named the First Team All-League in the Lyon County League as well as First Team All-State in the KVA 1A Division II.

The Lady Titan led her team with 4.9 kills per set and 397 total kills while also leading with one ace serve and 80 total aces per set. Weers was also second on the team with one dig per set and totaled 78 total digs while also knocking 34 total blocks on the year. She will play volleyball at Allen Community College next season.
