A mini-run by Parsons High’s Viking girls in a short span in the fourth quarter proved to be the undoing of Iola High’s Fillies Friday night.
In a tight Southeast Kansas League contest, the Fillies were down by one, 22-21, with four minutes left in the game. The visiting Vikings scored twice to push their lead to five.
The Fillies had three shots on one possession and didn’t get one to go. Parsons finished it off with  a 6-4 run to for the 32-25 victory.
“We played a good game. We did a great job on the offensive boards and our defense was solid again,” said Becky Carlson, Fillies’ head coach. “The first time we played them they dominated us on the boards.”
Iola continues to struggle to score. The Fillies shot 31 percent, 10 of 31 from the field.
Parsons used a zone defense to dictate a lot of the shot selection.
“But we had a lot of good looks, especially in the first half, that we just did not finish our shots on. Everything looks better when your shots are going in,” Carlson said.
The SEK game wasn’t played on the IHS gym floor Friday. Leaks in the IHS gym roof moved the varsity basketball games to Allen County Community College.
It was the Fillies’ first SEK loss of the season. They are 2-1 in the league and 6-9 overall while the Vikings improved to 2-0 and 10-4.
The Fillies are idled Tuesday then travel to Fort Scott next Friday for a SEK contest.
Kelsey Adams opened the scoring with a basket for Iola at the 6:56 mark of the game. Kiralyn Mosier hit a three for Parsons and it was on.
Adams had another basket and Iola trailed 5-4 at the end of the period.
Kendra Taiclet, who had a double-double for the Fillies, and Parsons’ Sawyer Woodworth traded baskets to begin the second quarter.
Adams’ third basket of the game put Iola up 8-7 with 6:29 left.  The Fillies led 10-9 when Mosier hit another trey with 4:57 on the clock then had a basket to put the Vikings in the lead, 14-10.
Taiclet scored at the 1:10 mark. That made it 14-12 which stood as the halftime score.
The Fillies trailed 16-12 when Kelsey Larson drove the floor for a layup. Taiclet had back-to-back baskets to give Iola an 18-16 lead.
Back came Parsons on field goals by Sierra Kemp and Woodworth.
Larson sank two free throws as the fourth quarter began to tie it at 20-20. But Larson went to the Iola bench at the 5:41 mark with her fourth foul.
Parsons switched to a man-to-man defense and quickly got a turnover and a basket. Taiclet hit one of two free throws to make it 22-21.
Taylor Kemp’s follow shot triggered a 8-0 run by the Vikings. That proved to be enough to hold off the Fillies.
Taiclet finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Larson had 12 rebounds and two steals. Adams had two steals and Lauren Toney handed out two assists.
Mosier and Woodworth led the Vikings with nine points each.
Iola won the junior varsity game 36-35. Hannah Endicott led the way with seven points. Lexie Long and Emma Piazza each added six.
There was no freshman girls’ game.
