COLONY—Losing isn’t so bad when the team gives it there all.
It’s that attitude that had Crest High Lancer head coach Travis Hermreck staying positive after a tough 60-42 home loss Tuesday to Central Heights High’s Vikings.
“I felt like our kids battled,” said the head coach of the 3-2 Lancers. “We played far from perfect but we really competed hard, and we never threw in the towel.”
Crest’s high-energy defense helped keep the game close early. The Lancers scored 11 points to the Vikings 12 in the first period. But the Vikings proved to be too much for the Lancers. Central Heights doubled Crest’s offensive production in the second period, scoring 20 points to the Lancers’ 10. The Vikings took a 32-21 advantage into the second half and never looked back.
“Central Heights is a very good team. They are very talented and very athletic,” Hermreck said.
Crest’s Kyle Hammond set the pace for the Lancers with a game high 24 points while teammates Jordan Morton and Brock Ellis added eight and six points of their own respectively.
“The strength of our team right now is the fact that we are so unselfish.,” Hermreck said. “We wait and wait until we get the shot we want, and (Hammond) has been doing a great job of knocking those down.
“It was good game to go into Christmas break with,” he added. “Now, we can sit down and get back to the drawing board a little bit.”
Leading scorer for the Vikings was Cody Sluder with 23 points.
