UNIONTOWN — Two teams undefeated in Three Rivers League play met here Friday night. Something had to give.
Unfortunately for the home crowd, Uniontown High’s Eagle boys had a tough second half against Northeast High’s Vikings of Arma. The Vikings were clinging to a one-point halftime lead then kept the Eagles in check for a 43-31 win.
It was 19-18 at the break of the boys’ game. The Vikings outscored the Eagles 13-8 in the third period and 11-5 in the fourth.
Uniontown’s boys slipped to 8-1 in TRL play and 14-5 overall. Northeast’s boys go 8-0 and 15-4.
Seth Sympson led the Eagles with nine points while Zach Travis and Brenton Esslinger each added seven.
Northeast got 18 points from Chase Cleland.
It was a bit of a letdown after Uniontown’s Eagle girls posted a resounding 48-27 win over the Viking girls. The Eagle girls opened on a 16-7 run in the first quarter to control the contest.
Uniontown extended its 28-19 halftime lead by outscoring Northeast 14-4 in the third quarter. The Eagle girls had a 6-4 scoring edge in the fourth period.
“We got off to a good start. We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we would like but our defense picked us up,” said Ken Holt, UHS girls’ “Our bench players came in and plyed well. Lakyn Coyan and DaNisha Robinson gave us some really good minutes.”
Uniontown was led by Hope Jurgensen with 14 points, five steals and four assists. Jacy Erml added 11 points.
The Eagle girls had a 33 to 21 edge in rebounding. Hayden Rathbun cleared eight rebounds and Robinson had six.
Lauren Rockhold dished out four assists. Ermel blocked two shots.
Kaylee Bogine paced the Viking girls with 12 points.
The Uniontown girls are 8-1 in TRL play and 13-6 overall.
