GIRARD — Two days after Iola seventh grader Trenton Varney broke the school record in the 1600 meters with a 5:20.8, he set out to raise the bar in Girard on Thursday.
Mission accomplished.
Varney took first in the meet with a 5:16.43 to break his own record.
Varney also finished second in the 800 meters while Iola won the 4×200 relay and the sprint medley relay for the seventh grade boys.
Seventh grader Brett Willis took fourth in the 200 meters. Kolton Lacrone was fifth in the 100 meters and Evan Casner was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.
For the seventh-grade girls, Josie Plumlee was the top performer with a fourth-place mark in the 1600 meters. Iola also finished fourth in the 4×200 relay.
Jack Adams led the eighth-grade boys with fourth-place finishes in the 1600 meters and 800 meters. Iola took fourth in the sprint medley relay.
For the eighth-grade girls, Averie Sharon was the star with a third-place finish in the 800 meters and a fifth in the 1600 meters.
Iola also took fifth in the 4×400 relay and Zareona Pulley was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.
