Uniontown and Northeast stand at the top of the league with 7-0 records. The teams meet next Friday for a showdown in Arma. Northeast played at Erie in a non-league game Friday.
Uniontown’s girls posted a 50-28 win over the Blu-Jays. The Eagles are 6-1 in league play, solidly in second place. They are 11-6 overall.
Jacy Ermel played her first game for the Eagles since December 2011. The 6-foot senior had a big game in her comeback with a double-double — 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Ermel left the team in 2011 to give birth to twins and transferred to Marmaton Valley High School in Moran for the spring semester. Ermel returned to Uniontown but was not eligible to play for her hometown team until Friday night.
“Jacy has had a big smile on her face all week. Tonight, we played well, especially defensively,” said Ken Holt, Uniontown girls’ head coach.
“We took care of the ball and rebounded. This was a really nice win for us.”
Two other Eagle girls recorded double-doubles. Hayden Ruthbun and Hope Jurgensen each scored 11 points and cleared 10 rebounds.
Uniontown had a 47 to 19 edge in rebounding over Pleasanton. Tayler Shook dished out four assists for the Eagles.
After a close first quarter with the Eagle girls leading 12-10, Uniontown outscored the Blu-Jays 24-7 in the next two periods. Uniontown finished out the game on a 14-11 run in the fourth quarter.
Teal Baker fired in 16 points for Pleasanton’s girls. They were 11 of 16 from the free-throw line.
Uniontown’s boys rolled up a 10-3 first-quarter lead and cruised past Pleasanton. The Eagles were up 29-17 at halftime and outscored the Jays 29-15 in the second half.
Zach Travis paced the Eagle boys with 22 points and Brenton Esslinger added 14.
The Eagle defense didn’t allow a Pleasanton player to reach double figures in scoring. Cale Campbell and Cort Hein led the Jays with six points each.
