ST. Paul — Uniontown High’s softball team had a steady build up in the opener Thursday. The Eagles scored almost as many in the first inning of the second game as they did the entire first contest.

The Eagles chalked up two Three Rivers League victories in their league opener on the road. Uniontown beat St. Paul High’s Indians 8-1 and 14-3.

“It was a big improvement offensively from Tuesday night. We were able to put the ball in play with our bats,” said Alan Shinn, Uniontown head coach.

“We were much more aggressive at the plate and on the base paths.”

Taylor Wade (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Eagles in the first game. She allowed four hits and three walks and struck out nine.

Uniontown’s offense scored two runs in the first inning. It had single-run innings in the fourth and fifth then came back to score two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. St. Paul avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Eagle Hope Jurgensen connected for three singles. Mandy Ridge had two singles. Laykn Coyan, Wade and Jamie Dawson each had a base hit.

The Eagles gave Ridge, who pitched the second game, a seven-run lead right off the bat. Uniontown led 8-1 after two innings on its way to a run-rule win in five innings.

Ridge allowed seven hits and walked three. She struck out seven.

“We got strong performances by both of our pitchers and played excellent defense behind them,” Shinn said.

Tayler Shook connected for a double and two singles to lead the Eagle offense. Jurgensen had a triple and a single. Coyan tripled.

Hitting a single each were Britney Stokes, Raylene Crystal, Haley Felt, Dawson and Jessica Murrow.

Uniontown is 2-0 in TRL play and 3-1 overall. The Eagles host Northeast-Arma Monday in league action.
