PLEASANTON — A year ago, Uniontown High’s Eagles came out of Plesanton High’s Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament at 2-10 in eighth place.
There’s no repeat of that in the 2010 Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament. The Eagle girls claimed a 56-45 win over Prairie View High’s Buffalos in semifinal action Thursday.
The Eagles will take on defending tournament champion, Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks for this year’s championship. Jayhawk-Linn defeated Central Heights 41-34 Thursday.
Uniontown (7-3) and Jayhawk-Linn (7-3) square off at 4 p.m. in Pleasanton’s north gym.
On the consolation side of the girls’ bracket Thursday, three winless teams were out for a victory.
Crest High’s Lady Lancers notched their first win, a 44-31 decision over host Pleasanton High’s Blu-Jays (0-8). Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs (0-10) lost 61-31 to Northeast High’s Lady Vikings.
Something will have to give Saturday in the 1 p.m. seventh-place game in the north gym as Humboldt and Pleasanton meet. Crest plays Northeast at 2:30 p.m. in the south gym for fifth place.
Uniontown 56, Prairie View 45
Uniontown steadily pulled away from Prairie View in the first half, leading 30-15 at intermission. The Buffalos didn’t fold and closed the gap with a 19-10 run in the third quarter.
“This was a good win for us. Defensively we really played well, especially in the first half,” said Ken Holt, Eagle head coach. “They made a run to get within four in the third but I was proud of the way our girls responded.”
The Eagles were up 40-34 going into the fourth quarter. They outscored the Buffalos 16-11 to finish the game.
Abbie Smith fired in 17 points for the Eagles. Jacy Ermel added 12 points plus pulled down eight rebounds, blocked four shots and made four steals. Candice Clayton had four steals while Tiffany Poyner and Hayden Rathbun each had four assists.
Candace Wilson poured in 11 points for Prairie View. Devon Morris added 10.
Crest 44, Pleasanton 31
Scoring points has been a problem for Crest’s Lady Lancers this season but not Thursday night. They wiped out a 17-16 halftime deficit with a 20-8 run in the third quarter against Pleasanton. Crest didn’t allow the Blu-Jays to come back and won by 13.
In their first win of the season, the Lady Lancers got 13 points from Amanda Strickler and 10 points from Kurston Gilliland. Six other Lady Lancers scored in the game.
Pleasanton’s Johnnea Saulsberry tossed in 11 points.
Northeast 61, Humboldt 31
Still searching for a win are Humboldt’s Lady Cubs after falling to Northeast Thursday. The Lady Vikings powered to a 24-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
It was 44-25 at halftime and the Lady Cubs scored just six points in the second half.
“We played pretty well in the first half. Northeast shot lights out, hitting eight threes,” said Jeff Wilkerson, Humboldt head coach.
“We just didn’t have a good second half.”
Whitney Strack fired in 10 points for Humboldt. Taylyn Wells and Melissa Davidson had nine points each. The Lady Cubs were 7 of 16 at the free-throw line.
Northeast got 24 points from Lina Hensely, who hit six three-pointers, and 13 from Britney Clark. The Lady Vikings were 11 of 15 from the line.
