BEATRICE, Neb. — The Red Devil softball team suffered a tough loss in game one against Southeast Community College (Neb.) on Thursday.
Southeast was able to rally from an early deficit with three runs in the fourth inning of Allen Community College ace sophomore Raegan Beckley to snatch a 4-3 victory away from the Red Devils.
Allen leadoff hitter Winter Henry was the team’s top hitter in game one with a 3-for-4 day. Sophomore Morgan Wayman added two more hits including a home run.
The Red Devils responded better in game two when it appeared that Southeast was going to rally for another win.
After Allen built a 7-0 lead, Southeast scored four runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to take a two run lead, but the Red Devils were not ready to accept a sweep.
Allen scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game back up and after freshman Sierra Thompson kept the Southeast offense silent, it was a local hero that came up big for the Red Devils.
Sophomore outfielder Delaney Umholtz — a Humboldt graduate — stroked a double into center field to score Sarah Eckart from second base with one out in the top of the seventh.
Thompson retired Southeast 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to get the win.
Henry and Alexis Ramos each had three hits at the top of the Allen lineup in game two while Umholtz and Wayman each added a pair of hits with both of Umholtz’s hits being doubles.
The split makes Allen 10-19 so far this season and the win puts the end to a skid that has seen the Red Devils lose 13 of their last 14 games, including their previous for games.
