UNIONTOWN — Jessica Harrison was a part of a big run by the Uniontown High volleyball team over the past four years. That included an appearance in the 2009 Kansas Class 2A State Volleyball Tournament.
Harrison’s volleyball career moves forward as the UHS senior signed Tuesday to play volleyball at Labette Community College in Parsons next year.
“I knew a few current players for Labette and felt the program and the college were a good fit for me,” Harrison said. “I looked at a few other colleges but Labette had what I wanted in academics and gives me an opportunity to play volleyball.”
Harrison plans on majoring in criminal justice at LCC. She plans to “do whatever they need me to do” for the Cardinal volleyball team.
Labette struggled with a young team in Jayhawk Conference play and overall in 2010. The Cardinals were 0-10 in the conference and 1-30 overall.
“We did struggle but we saw improvement throughout the season,” said Jennifer Ginn, LCC head coach. “Jessica is the type of player we want in our program and we are excited she is coming here.
“She has good all-around skills, and definitely got the ups to play outside hitter for us.”
Ginn said Harrison was a utility player she’ll be able to use on the front row or back row. Harrison had 75 kills, 31 solo blocks and 171 assisted blocks this past fall for Uniontown.  She also served 41 aces.
Harrison said she had family ties to Labette, which is where her mother went to college. She is the daughter of Rhonda and Marty DeWitt.
