ALTAMONT — Two Iola High junior varsity wrestlers competed in Saturday’s Labette County High JV Takedown Tournament.
Jordan Long went 2-3 and Travis Rieske lost all five of his matches. Both wrestled in the 152-pound weight class but in separate pools.
All nine Southeast Kansas League teams had competitors along with Cherryvale, Frontenac, Erie and Andover. Once a takedown was scored in a match both wrestlers were put back on their feet and the match resumed.
The only exception was if a wrestler had a takedown that put his opponent directly to his back. Points were awarded for near falls or a pin was called.
“It was a good change from the normal routine of a match. This was a solid junior varsity competition with former state qualifiers and other high-caliber kids in the mix,” said Aaron Sweazy, IHS head coach.
Long defeated Aaron McCoach of Labette County 8-4 and downed McKenzie of Labette County 12-2. Long lost 9-4 to Kyle Dean of Erie.
Against Edwards of Parsons, Long lost 15-0. Long was leading in his final match but was taken down and put on his back for a five-point move by Haslett. Long lost 5-4.
Rieske had a similar sitation in his first match of the day. He took down Garrett Brittain of Columbus and put him on his back, scoring four points. Brittain came back with a takedown of Rieske and pinned him.
Rieske lost 12-2 to Turner of Frontenac and 19-2 to Stock of Andover. Fairly of Andover beat Rieske 8-2 and Dalton Wiley of Labette County pinned Rieske.
