HUMBOLDT — The rest of the Tri-Valley League will have to wait a year to check out USD 258’s new track and field facilities.
The facilities are part of the new USD 258 sports complex on the east edge of Humboldt, which also includes the new football, baseball and softball fields.
The track is complete, and in fact will be used to host a middle school meet Thursday.
But grass planted near the discus ring has yet to take root, noted USD 258 Superintendent of Schools K.B. Criss.
“We just couldn’t get the rain when we needed it,” he said. “Now, if it even rains a day or two before the meet, we’d have a mess.”
Fredonia school officials agreed to exchange hosting duties with Humboldt, and will host the 2014 TVL track meet on May 15. Humboldt will host the league meet in 2015.
“Since it’s only a one year away, we were happy with it,” Criss said. “If we would have had to wait two or three years, we probably would have just hosted it this season.”
School officials will decide Thursday whether ground surrounding the discus ring is too muddy for the middle school meet, Criss said.
“If it is, we may just bus the competitors out to our old throwing rings,” he said.
