FORT SCOTT — When Iola High’s girls were able to hang onto the ball, and make crisp passes, the Fillies were able to get good looks at the basket, head coach Becky Carlson said Friday.
Problem was, Fort Scott’s pressure defense ensured those instances were few and far between.
Fort Scott amped up its defensive pressure in the second and third quarters, outscoring Iola 25-5 over the two periods.
The Fillies’ 43-13 loss keeps Iola winless during the 2012-13 season.
“We just have to value possession of the ball,” Carlson said. “Our struggles aren’t from lack of effort.”
Iola was effective at times moving the ball methodically around the perimeter, a tempo that occasionally had Fort Scott on its heels.
Emery Driskel scored early for Iola. She and Reagan Ford hit free throws one second apart to close Fort Scott’s lead to 6-4.
But the Tigers’ Teira Floyd scored two straight baskets over a 10-second span, the second coming off of a steal and layup, to trigger a 13-3 Tiger run.
Mikaela Platt scored inside and added a free throw, providing the Fillies’ only points of the second quarter.
Fort Scott led 19-7 at halftime. Iola’s Hannah Endicott scored to start the third quarter, cutting the Tiger lead to 10, but Fort Scott responded with 18 straight points to put the game out of reach.
Platt scored again early in the fourth quarter, giving her a team-high five points, then Jo Lohman capped the Fillies’ scoring with a bucket at the 2-minute mark.
Sidney Maycumber led Fort Scott with 10 points.
Fort Scott also prevailed, 40-19, in the junior varsity contest. Lohman had five points and Ashlie Shields four for the Fillies’ JV. Emma Piazza and Platt had three points each. Endicott, Driskel and Paige Miller had two points apiece.
The Fillies C team dropped a 28-22 decision. Shields scored nine points, McKayli Cleaver had four points.
Iola resumes play Tuesday on the road at Wellsville.
