“We don’t quite understand how to deal with momentum at this point,” coach Bill Peeper said. “We let things kind of snowball on us. We let one bad possession turn into two, then three and we lose our heads trying to make something happen. The next thing you know, it’s been five or six possessions in a row and we’re now down 10.”
The Mustangs started off with quick 5-1 lead. Kaden Macha hit one of two free throws, Adam Peterson scored a transition layup and Macha drove the lane. The Trojans made a free throw during that run.
WIth 1:55 left in the first, Peterson hit a jumper in the lane to give Iola the 9-5 lead. Before the end of the quarter, Osawatomie’s Riley England stole a pass and took it in for an uncontested layup. Iola led 9-7 at the end of the quarter.
The Trojans made their move in the second quarter. Derek Manes scored on a putback to tie the game at 9-9. Iola’s Kohl Endicott gave the Mustangs the lead back with a putback of his own.
Later in the quarter, Brett Taylor scored on a layup and Peterson scored in transition for a quick four-point swing. It gave Iola a 15-12 lead with 3:45 left in the half.
Trouble followed.
The Trojans raced to the lead on a 17-point run that lasted until 7:15 in the third quarter. Osawatomie led 27-15 at the half and 31-15 in the third.
Osawatomie’s Morgan Soucie scored 15 of his 24 points in the second and third quarters.
Peterson put the Mustangs on the board in the second half, scoring in transition. He scored a team-high 14 points. It wasn’t a good shooting night for the Mustangs. Iola only hit 6 of 24 free throws.
At one point in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs scored three points in 90 seconds, from three different players. Shane Walden, Chase Regehr and Brice Aiello all hit one of two free throws during the stretch.
Iola (3-5) hosts Wellsville next Friday in the team’s homecoming game at 8 p.m.
“I still feel like Osawatomie is going to be at the top of the class league wise, then Wellsville and Prairie View will be right there pushing them,” Peeper said. “There’s not any game in the league that we can’t compete in, it’s just at this point we’re not demonstrating our strengths. We are so much better than what we are showing.”
