After last week’s strides forward, Iola High’s Fillies were left in the dust by Osawatomie on Tuesday.
“We played really well last week and that was my frustration tonight, we just didn’t,” coach Melissa Stiffler said. “The first game, I was honestly ready to pull them off the field. They were just jogging around, they didn’t look like they wanted to be here. Their minds were elsewhere.”
The final for game one was a 15-1 loss.
Iola’s only run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Riley Murray came through with an RBI-single that brought in Katie Shields, who reached on a single. Both batters came to the plate with two outs. The run kept the game from being a shutout. At that point the score was 14-0.
Shields also accounted for the team’s only other hit in the game. Tuesday’s offense wasn’t able to get to Osawatomie’s pitchers. Last week, Iola was able to get a 7-4 win in nine innings against Anderson County. That win didn’t translate to this week.
“It was frustrating when you can’t make routine plays,” Stiffler said. “Then, you think you can put someone in that can. But, you hate to stop giving them chance after chance after chance, but it keeps happening over and over again.
“They were hitting the ball, you have to give that to [Osawatomie]. That was probably the most frustrated I’ve been this season.”
In game two, the Fillies kept it close for the majority of the game before a late-inning rally pushed the score to 15-3 in the Trojans’ favor.
Ashlie Shields scored two runs for Iola on two singles. Sydney Wade scored Iola’s other run after reaching on a single. Jadyn Sigg and Baleigh Seeber each had a single in the game.
In the fifth inning, Iola trailed 6-3 and had the tying run at the plate. But, a base-running miscue resulted in a double-play to end the inning. That’s when Osawatomie blasted ahead to win by double-digits.
“I get frustrated, but then I just have to remind myself, ‘maybe they just don’t know,’” Stiffler said. “That’s the hard part for me coming in so late — not that I’m making excuses — because I haven’t worked with them as much as I would like to know what they know.”
Iola (2-6) hosts Parsons on Tuesday.
