HUMBOLDT — For a guy who won his first USRA Modified feature last year at Humboldt Speedway, Travis Smith has quickly developed into a speed merchant extraordinaire.
Friday’s USRA Modified feature is a perfect illustration. With pristine track conditions, Smith and Paden “Payday” Phillips sat on the front row and were nose to tail when the green flag dropped.
Smith held the lead by the end of the third lap before local racing stalwart John Allen shot to the front. A caution and restart, coupled with a nifty Allen pass for the lead, did not dissuade Smith, who quickly retook the lead and never looked back.
At the finish, Allen was second, and Phillips third. Fourth went to Jon Sheets. Ryan McAninch claimed fifth.
Have you ever noticed how a racing engine runs it’s very best just before it blows up? Ask Jimmie Davis. He was untouchable in the B-Mod feature, until his motor went South with two laps to go. From that point, Andy Bryant took over to win the event. Levi McGowen was second, Dylan Allen third. Riley Whitworth finished fourth, Ethan Isaacs fifth.
Jeremy Wilson scored his second Stock Car feature win in as many weeks, holding runner-up David Matlock at bay. Tyler James was third, Ken Colston fourth.
Derrek Wilson led the Pure Stock feature from start to finish. Churning took second, holding off hard-charging Wayne Johnson. Don McIntosh and Mitch Coulter rounded out the “Fab Five.”
This Friday’s races feature Kids Night fun. Kids will race bicycles at half time.
