ARKANSAS CITY — They welcomed the challenge of walking onto the volleyball court of No. 1 ranked Cowley County Community College.
Unfortunately, Allen County Community College’s Red Devils weren’t up to challenging the Tigers Wednesday. The Red Devils fell hard to the NJCAA Division 2 top-ranked team, 25-17, 25-18, 25-15.
“We knew we were going to be challenged. Cowley is ranked No. 1, but who better to challenge your true ability against?” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach.
“This was not what we did tonight. We gave Cowley 56 error points, which can translate as two sets given based on our errors.”
With the loss, the Red Devils fell to 3-6 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play and 14-19 overall.
Peters said the Red Devils don’t have weekend matches, so practices can be more about endurance and drive.
“We saw some moments of solid volleyball rallies against Cowley. We just couldn’t win the point,” she said.
Allen County did not get a block at the net against the Tigers. Alli Jenicke was the only hitter in double figure kills with 11.
Jacqui Ortiz and Nicole Reed each had one service ace. Ortiz had 13 set assists. Reed led the team in defensive digs with 15 and Ortiz had 11.
Makhala Giardina and Hayley Mertens each had six kills. Jordyne Seichepine had five kills. Alisha Keith made eight assists and Sabrina Stanley had six assists.
The Red Devils play back-to-back next week with a road match Tuesday at Longview Community College, then are at home Wednesday with Northeastern Oklahoma.
