HUMBOLDT — The outcome of Humboldt High’s contest against highly regarded Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan was decided fairly early Friday.
The visiting Panthers led 21-0 by the 4-minute mark of the first quarter and never looked back in a 45-14 win.
Even so, Humboldt head coach Mike Miller said his team’s effort and intensity gave him optimism regarding the young squad’s future growth.
“I told them going in that this was the best team we were going to play and was probably the best team in the state,” Miller said. “We could use this game as a measuring stick, and we came out and competed from start to finish.”
Colgan upped its 31-0 halftime lead to 38-0 early in the second half before Humboldt’s Hayden Boring raced in on a 29-yard touchdown run. Caleb Vanatta scored the Cubs’ other touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Derrik McCall in the fourth quarter.
Vanatta led Humboldt with 54 yards through the air on six receptions. Jarred Barr had two catches for 31 yards. Boring had 49 yards on 12 rushes. McCall ran eight times for 46 yards and completed 11 of 19 passes for 97 yards. McCall also led Humboldt’s defense with 11 tackles.
The Panthers racked up 249 yards on the ground.
“We competed hard and had some success, which makes it a lot funnier,” Miller said.
Humboldt travels to Olpe next Friday.
