High School Baseball: Humboldt 19, Eureka 4; Humboldt 15, Eureka 0
The No. 1 ranked Humboldt Cubs continued their early-season run of dominance with a sweep over Eureka in their first road trip of the season.
The 8-0 Cubs beat the Tornados 19-4 and 15-0.
Humboldt started off strong with a four-run top of the first followed with a two-run top of the second. Eureka answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second to get within three.
The Cubs brought that lead back to six with a three-run top of the fourth and pushed that to seven with a run in the fifth.
Eureka made its last bit of noise in this game and the next in the bottom of the fifth with a single run to cut Humboldts lead to 10-4.
The Cubs werent done, though, and like theyve done all season, they left zero doubt, scoring a run in the top of the sixth and then eight more in the top of the seventh to close the game with a bang.
Senior Josh Vanatta went seven innings in the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out four.
Vanatta was also tops at the plate, recording four hits and two RBIs. Taylor Lassman had three hits and two walks to go with two RBIs. Conor Haviland followed right behind them with three hits and an RBI.
Humboldt was active on the basepaths, recording 17 stolen bases, including five for Dagen Goodner and four for Wyatt Seufert and Lance Daniels.
The second game was much the same result, just shorter.
The three-inning smiting started off with a 10-run top of the first that led to a five-inning top of the second to bring the lead to 15-0.
No one scored in the third and the game ended with the run-rule.
Goodner got the win with a two-hit, two-walk shutout where he stuck out two batters.
Despite the 15 runs scored, Vanatta was the only Cub batter to have a multi-hit game with two hits and an RBI. Humboldt was walked 10 times and multiple errors from Eureka led to only four of the Cubs 15 runs being earned.
Humboldt will return home on and play Burlington on Thursday to close out the week.
