WELLSVILLE — For the second time this season, the Iola High Fillies had no answer for the Wellsville Eagles, losing 67-26.

For most of the season, the Eagles have enjoyed a spot in the top-10 rankings in class 3A. However, the last week of the season they fell out of the rankings, leaving them with a point to prove on Tuesday.

Seniors Madie McCoy and Demi Aamold led the Eagles with 15 and 16 points respectively. Eagle junior Jadyn Troutman also was a force, finishing with 11 points.

Wellsville’s core trio was too hot to handle, but they weren’t the only Eagles getting on the scoring sheet.

“The funny story is, when we played them the first time, I think 10 (McCoy) had 22, and 5 (Aamold) had 17, but hardly anyone else scored,” said Iola head coach Becky Carlson. “Tonight, right away, their other girls knocked down shots.”

The Fillies faced a manageable 17-9 deficit after the first quarter, thanks to their patience in offense.

“We ran our offense until we got good shots, and didn’t force anything,” Carlson said. “We didn’t panic on our press. But then we got a little bit behind, and began to panic.”

Wellsville constructed a 9-2 run in the second, taking a 29-11 lead with just over four minutes remaining.

Iola’s Lauryn Holloway and Hannah Gardner connected on back-to-back 3-pointers late in the second, but the Fillies still faced a 39-17 halftime deficit after an 8-0 Eagle run to close the quarter.

Iola’s second quarter struggles lingered through the halftime team talk. The Eagles opened the third with a 10-2 run. Holloway’s sweeping right-handed hook got the Fillies on the board in the second half after three scoreless minutes.

The biggest bright spot in the second half for Iola came via back-to-back treys from Rachel Bycroft near the end of the third, but the Fillies still trailed 53-25. The clock would be left running in the fourth as the Fillies moved to 8-11 on the season.

Holloway finished as Iola’s leading scorer with eight points, followed by Bycorft with six, and Becca Sprague with five.

The Fillies will close out its regular season on Thursday at Santa Fe Trail. Iola has lost both of its games against the Chargers this season, yet are hopeful the third time’s the charm.

YOUNG FILLIES

The freshman/sophomore Fillies closed out their regular season with a 41-25 over Wellsville. Iola finishes the regular season with a six-game winning streak to finish 8-4 on the year. The Fillies were led by 22 points from Maci Miller. Alson on the scoresheet was Reece Murry scoring seven, Elanie Sturgeon with six, Miah Sleby chipping in four, and Caiden Cloud finishing with 2.

HUMBOLDT HOOPS

The Humboldt Lady Cubs earned a massive 48-21 victory over Cherryvale on Tuesday night. Jada Dangerfield scored 16 points, the only Lady Cub finishing in double figures. Seniors Winter Snyder and Emma Johson scored seven and six points respectively.
