Now is the time for New Year’s resolutions and millions of people across the country will make it their top goal to get into better shape.
The only problem with beginning that goal in January is that with winter in our midst, it isn’t as easy to go out for a run or take your bike out for a spin as it will be in a couple of months. So how do you jump-start your top 2017 resolution?
The Iola Recreation Department has the solution: Take a six-week fitness class with Sarah Noah.
Noah is instructing five workout-based classes that all start during the first week of January. The classes are $30 each, but you can take her County Heat Line Dancing course, PiYo Live and Insanity Live course for a total of $50. Each of those classes meets one evening a week.
The deadline to sign up is Friday.
The other classes being offered are yoga for anyone and a specialized yoga course for athletes. The traditional course meets twice a week and the athlete-specific course meets once a week.

PiYo Live
The PiYo course is a combination of pilates and yoga.
The course is designed to be a fun, low-impact workout, but keeps the intensity up to get results.
The class meets Monday evenings from  6:15 to 7 p.m.

Country Line Dancing with County Heat
If you are looking for a fun class that can also improve your skills on the dance floor, Noah’s line dancing course may be your answer.
The class line dances to country music and the course is designed to be a high-energy, low-impact workout for all fitness levels.
The class meets on Tuesday evenings from 6 until 6:45 p.m.

Insanity Live
Insanity Live is a cardio class  designed to push you past your limits and is based on max interval training.
Despite the intensity of the course, participants are allowed to ease in with varying levels for each exercise.
The class meets on Saturday mornings from  7:15 to 8 a.m.

Yoga
The traditional yoga class is designed to increase flexibility and balance while building strength.
The class meets Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 12:15 until 12:45 p.m.
The athlete-specific yoga course is all about building muscle and improving balance and flexibility to give you an edge in competition.
The more intense course can also help athletes with injury prevention.
The athlete-specific class meets on Wednesday nights from 6:15 until 7 p.m.

Basketball Leagues
Another we to stay active is to register a team in the Men’s Basketball League.
Teams must be registered by Friday.
All participants are 18 and older and games are on Sunday afternoons beginning on Jan. 8.

Youth Basketball
Youth basketball registration is also open now until Jan. 5.
Kids from kindergarten through sixth grade may participate.
Games will be on Saturdays beginning on Jan. 7.

Other offerings
Iola Recreation also offers open gyms, open walking and a senior-cise class throughout the year.
