LE ROY — Falling behind 16-0 midway through the first half of the first quarter Friday, Southern Coffey County High’s Titans looked to have a tough 2011 fall homecoming.
Visiting Crest High’s Lancers were out to spoil the celebration and win the season-opener for both teams. Then the Titans settled down and went to work, battling back to a 16-16 tie and a 24-22 halftime lead.
Southern Coffey County outscored Crest 48-20 in the second half, winning 72-42.
“We were definitely a little too hyped to start the game and Crest took advantage of it,” said Korey Lankton, Titan head coach. “They forced two turnovers on our first two drives and got us to jump offsides several times.”
Lankton said the Titans felt the momentum change when they tied the game at 16-all. Crest’s Kyle Hammond had his second four-yard touchdown run to put the Lancers back up 22-16.
Two minutes later, Turner Anderson broke free for a 35-yard romp to the end zone for the Titans. A two-point conversion run by Dusty Watts put the Titans in front for good, 24-22.
Watts took a screen pass from Wes Callahan and ran to paydirt. The scoring play covered 32 yards and Watts tacked on the two-point conversion for a 32-22 lead to open the second half.
“We have to give credit to our offensive line of Scott Fischer, Walker Harred, Luke Kraft, Zack Loveall and KEWade Seabolt. They controlled the line of scrimmage all night and I felt they got stronger as the night went on,” said Lankton.
The Titans rolled up 486 yards on the ground. Watts had 150 yards on 24 carries, Anderson rushed for 138 on 15 carries, Callahan had 127 yards on 12 carries. Charlie Patterson had 54 yards on seven hauls.
Callahan was 8 of 11 for 90 yards and one interception. The interception was returned 76 yards for a touchdown by Crest’s Jordan Morton in the first quarter.
Watts caught four passes for 50 yards and Patterson made two receptions for 30 yards.
Leading the Titan defense was Seabolt with 13 tackles and Tre Copeland with 14 tackles. Callahan made an interception and recovered two Lancer fumbles.
This Friday Southern Coffey County (1-0) goes to Waverly and Crest (0-1) hosts Altoona-Midway for its 2011 fall homecoming.
