Le Roy — The Southern Coffey County High Titans (2-1) got a hard fought 28-22 win Friday night on their home field against the Yates Center Wildcats (0-3).
Drawing first blood were the Wildcats as Robert Arnold caught an eight-yard pass from quarterback Bryce Leon with just under seven minutes to play in the first quarter.
But the Titans answered with a touchdown of their own as Wes Callahan punched in a three-yard run, bringing the Titans within two points as the final seconds of the quarter ticked away
The action stagnated for both teams in the second quarter as the only two points scored came off a Yates Center safety four minutes into the period. The teams went into the locker room at halftime with Yates Center leading 10-6.
In the third quarter, it was all about the Titans. Turner Anderson had a one-yard touchdown run to give SCC its first lead of the game, and the Titans never looked back. On the very next drive, Anderson plugged another ground score into the end zone. Walker Harrad joined the SCC scoring party with a fumble recovery he returned for a 21-yard score, giving the Titans a 28-10 lead.
The Wildcats didn’t roll over though. In the fourth quarter, Yates Center fought back, though a 43-yard touchdown pass from Leon to Brent Rice cut SCC’s lead to 12. The final score of the game came off a five-yard Leon run but with less than five minutes remaining in the match, it was too little to late.
SCC head coach Korey Lankton praised Yates Center for playing tough, saying the game could have easily ended in the Wildcats favor.
“They really took it to us,” he said. “Aside from the third quarter, they really controlled the line of scrimmage. We had a hard time handling some of their size.”
The adjustments made at halftime proved to be the difference, Lankton said.
