COLONY — Staging an “incredibly intense game” to open the 2010-2011 season were Crest High’s Lancers and visiting Southern Coffey County High’s Titans Thursday.
The Titans took home a 31-28 non-league win.
“I had a lot of fun watching these two teams battle it out,” said Travis Hermreck, Crest head coach.
“I’m not a fan of losing but I can sleep well after this one. The boys left everything they had on the floor. We just came up short.”
Southern Coffey County led 9-8 after one quarter then outscored Crest 14-4 in the second period. The Titans were up 23-12 at halftime.
The Lancers rallied on a 12-4 run in the third period. Southern Coffey County was up by three, 27-24, going into the fourth quarter.
The Titans were able to do just enough — offensively and defensively — to win. Each team added just four points to their totals in the final eight minutes.
Travis Bryan led Southern Coffey County with 12 points, which included his team’s four fourth-quarter points. The Titans shot 36 percent, 13 of 36, from the field.
The Titans had a 27 to 18 advantage in rebounding.
Crest got 10 points and four assists from Kyle Hammond. Luke Decker had eight points and 11 rebounds. The Lancers were 10 of 41, 24 percent, from the field.
Crest goes to Jayhawk-Linn tonight for another non-league game.
Southern Coffey County hosts Madison Tuesday in Lyon County League play.
