HUMBOLDT — Visiting Lyndon High showed with devastating efficiency why the Tigers are still undefeated in the 2011 season.
Lyndon ran seven offensive plays in the first quarter of their contest at Humboldt Friday.
And scored touchdowns on four of them.
Humboldt, meanwhile, misfired on a few prime scoring opportunities in the first half in a 46-0 loss.
The defeat drops the Cubs to 1-5 and 0-2 in Class 2-1 District 1 play.
“We just didn’t have the horses to keep up with them,” Humboldt head coach Mike Miller said. “From one to 11, they have good players on both sides of the ball. We’re not there yet, but we hope to be.”
Until the waning moments of the second quarter, Lyndon’s longest scoring drive took four plays.
“We had guys in position to make plays, but we didn’t get it done,” Miller said.
Lyndon took Humboldt’s opening punt back to the Cub four-year line and ran in a score on their first play from scrimmage. Their second drive took three plays; their third drive took four, and their fourth consisted of one play, a 41-yard jaunt by Cameron Woodruff to lead 26-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Humboldt narrowly missed on a long pass attempt midway through the period, when a Cub receiver got behind the Tiger secondary, but the pass bounced out of his arms.
The Cubs then recovered a pair of fumbles deep in Lyndon territory, but fumbled away the ball on their first attempt, then came up 3 yards short of the goal line on fourth down. Still another drive was curtailed when a long pass play was negated by an offensive pass interference penalty.
Humboldt could muster only 56 yards of total offense, compared to Lyndon’s 344.
Trey Johnson rushed seven times for 14 yards, while Nathan Whitcomb completed 4 of 7 passes for 50 yards. Three of the passes went to Tanner McNutt, covering 47 yards.
On defense, Ryan Gean had eight tackles and two fumble recoveries. Jacob Carpenter registered nine stops, while Blake Crawford had an interception and Grayson Parish recovered a fumble.
Humboldt travels to Pittsburg-Colgan St. Mary’s next Friday.
