Allen Community College’s Red Devils held a lead then tied the game twice after that, but fell short in extra innings Wednesday.
The Red Devils dropped a pair of Jayhawk Eastern Division games to visiting Cowley Community College’s Tigers. Allen is 5-7 in conference play and 17-13 overall.
In Wednesday’s opener, the Red Devils scored a run in the first inning. Alex Hill reached on an error and scored on a two-out single by Ashley Ribelin.
The Tigers tied the game, 1-1, with a run in the fourth. They took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh.
Allen extended the game to extra innings by producing a run in its half of the seventh inning. Ribelin and Jamee McEndree had back-to-back singles and a one-out ground-out by Lauren Poertner brought in the tying run.
Cowley scored a run in the eighth, as did Allen. Hill singled and took second on an error. Maecy Charleston’s base hit with two gone forged the 3-3 tie.
Haley Strawn led off the ninth for Cowley with a solo home run.
Allen wasn’t able to match it. The Red Devils went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth, losing 4-3.
Keelyn Bonar went the distance pitching for ACC, giving up seven hits but no walks. Ribelin had three singles. Hill, Charleston and McEndree each had a base hit.
Cowley scored two runs in the fourth and two in the seventh to win the second game 4-0. Allen had three hits — a double by Bonar and singles by Paige Rothwell and Taylor Easum.
Hill pitched five innings and took the loss, giving up two runs on four hits and had two strikeouts. Audra Nelson pitched two innings, allowing two runs on one hit and a walk with one strikeout.
The Red Devils go to Salina to play Brown Mackie Friday and are at Concordia Saturday to take on Cloud County.
