CHERRYVALE — Iola High School’s junior varsity wrestling squad brought home two bracket champions Saturday in the Cherryvale JV Wrestling Tournament.

The competition was grouped by wrestling ability and similar size, instead of weight brackets, IHS head coach Aaron Sweazy said.

Leading the way for Iola was Chase Roettgen, who went 5-0 on the day in his bracket, and Travis Rieske, who won both of his pool matches to claim first in his bracket. Rieske went 2-2.

Meanwhile, Tristan Sigfusson claimed second place in his bracket by going 1-1 in his pool (1-4 overall).

Jordan Long went 1-3 overall and 1-2 in his pool, but did not place. Raymond Branstetter went 0-4 overall, 0-3 in pool play.

Rieske: WBF McCoach, Labette County, :50; WBF over Swank, Burlington, 2:26; lost 11-8 to Hubbard, Seneca; LBF to Lipe, Seneca.

Sigfusson: Lost 8-2 to Wools, Pittsburg; win 9-2 over Sauder, Seneca; LBF to Fields, Pittsburg; lost 14-10 to Vangulda, Seneca.

The top two finishers in each bracket took first or second place. Wrestlers then participated in up to two extra matches to get experience, Sweazy said.
