As the school year inches closer, recreation baseball and softball are in its final stages at the Iola Recreation Department.
Wednesday night saw the conclusion of the Pee Wee and Little League for boys, along with the semi-finals for Jr. Ponytail.
In the Pee Wee final, A&W Restaurant shot out to an 8-0 lead over Iola Pharmacy, but the Pharmacists didnt go away silently. Jase Herrmann and Brock Michael were part of the rally to bring Iola Pharmacy back within one run, each picking up two hits in the fourth and fifth innings. Ultimately, the effort was too late as A&W held on for the 8-7 win. Caden McClain, Kolton Hanson, Ty Shaughnessy, Tj Cash, and Kale Pratt led the way for A&W.
The only team that challenged Allen County Regional Hospital all season long in Little League play was Iola Insurance. But Iola Insurance was unable to score a second defeat against AC, which handily won 14-1. Noah Gleue paralleled ACs consistency in his play, going a perfect 3-3 at the plate along with bringing home three of ACs 14 runs.
Jr. Ponytails semi-finals started with the matchup between Iola Pharmacy and Allen County Regional Hospital. Leading by four runs after one half inning, AC saw their lead trimmed to just one, but responded in the second. Lilly Blaufuss and Bri Barnett led off with a pair of singles, helping shoot the lead back up to four, making the score 7-3. Iola Pharmacy was unable to respond the rest of the way, sending AC to the championship.
In the other semi-final, Nelson Quarries held off a late rally from A&B Cleaning to punch their ticket to the Championship. Elza Clift led by example for Nelson Quarries, singling at every plate appearance to earn three hits. All of A&Bs runs came in the final inning courtesy of Kinsey Shinstock, Natalee Lower, and Savannah Flynn, but the rally was too little too late.
The Jr. Ponytail Championship is tonight at 7 oclock between Allen County Regional Hospital and Nelson Quarries.
