Substate matchups released

As area high schools, including Iola, wrap up the regular basketball season this week, the focus turns to Monday with the start of substate playoff action.

Iola’s Mustangs and Fillies are scheduled to open Class 4A-II Substate play starting March 3 in Burlington, although those pairings will not be announced until Friday.

Other schools in their substates are host Burlington and Santa Fe Trail. (As an aside, Iola is at Santa Fe Trail tonight to wrap up the regular season.)

The substate winners advance to the state playoffs beginning March 9 in Emporia.

 

HUMBOLDT High’s boys (16-4) are the top seed in their Class 3A substate tournament and will host Central Heights at 7 p.m. Monday.

The winner moves to the substate host site, Jayhawk-Linn, on March 3 for the semifinal round against either Jayhawk-Linn or Oskaloosa.

The Lady Cubs (14-6) are the second seed behind Northeast-Arma and will host seventh seed Perry-Lecompton at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winner plays either Wellsville or Central Heights March 4 at Jayhawk-Linn.

 

IN CLASS 2A, Yates Center’s boys (10-10) are the fifth seed and travel to fourth-seeded St. Mary’s Colgan of Pittsburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The winner plays in the semifinals against either top seed and unbeaten Sedan or Udall March 4 at Sedan, the host school.

The Wildcat girls (2-18) travel to top seed Sedan at 7 p.m. Monday for their opening round contest. The winner faces either St. Mary’s Colgan or Udall on March 3 in Sedan for the semifinals.

 

MARMATON Valley High’s girls (7-13) will face a familiar foe, Southern Coffey County (8-12) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in their Class 1A-I substate opener. The winner takes on unbeaten and top seed St. Paul on March 4 in Moran. Marmaton Valley is the substate host.

In boys action, Marmaton Valley (3-16) hosts Pleasanton at 6:30 p.m. Monday in their substate opener. The winner moves on to the semis against top seed Flinthills on March 3 in Moran.

 

CREST High’s boys (12-7) are the second seed in their Class 1A-II substate and will take on third seed Wetmore at 6 p.m. on March 3 in Hartford, the host site. The winner plays either top seed Hartford or the St. Xavier-Altoona-Midway winner in the championship March 5.

 

The Lady Lancers (1-16) must play winless Altoona-Midway in a play-in game at 6 p.m. Monday in Hartford. The winner plays top seed Hartford at 7:30 p.m. on March 4 in the semis.
