MORAN — Untimely penalties did in Marmaton Valley High’s offense Thursday evening.
“We moved the ball, but we’d get to the red zone and couldn’t push it in,” Wildcat coach Dan Uhlrich said. “False starts, procedures, discipline penalties, hurt us. We just shot ourselves in the foot too many times.”
The lost drives turned into a 38-6 loss to St. Paul that ended the Wildcats’ season at 1-8.
Marmaton Valley scored its only touchdown of the game when Micheal Genn broke loose on a 20-yard run midway through the first quarter to pull the Wildcats to within 8-6.
St. Paul then scored again to lead 14-6 after one quarter, 22-6 at halftime and 38-6 by the end of the third period.
Genn led the Wildcats with 60 yards on 13 carries. Trent Johnson had 11 rushes for 34 yards and went 5 of 20 passing for 47 yards. Chance Stevenson had 26 yards on the ground and 19 yards on three receptions. Brady Newman had a 16-yard reception. Keagan Boyd covered 12 yards on his only reception.
On defense, Trent Johnson had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Joey Jefferis had 10 stops and a fumble recovery. Genn registered two fumble recoveries and a eight tackles. Boyd also recovered a fumble. Stevenson pulled in an interception.
The Wildcats ended the season with 14 players on the roster, Uhlrich noted.
“I have a lot of respect for the kids who stuck it out with us,” he said. “They put in the work, a lot of work, in a tough season. I respect that.”
