On Wednesday evening, the Iola Seahorses had their final tune-up meet before league, at home versus Fort Scott and the name of the game for head coach Chelsea Lea was improvement.
“I saved all of their times from last year to give them something to work for,” Lea said. “So now they’re trying to catch their bests from last year and a lot of them have caught up and passed it already. So I’m really excited to see how they place against everybody.”
Fort Scott brought strong competition and good numbers which, according to Lea, really helped in prepping her older swimmers for the league meet a week from Saturday.
“A lot of my older swimmers often go against teams that don’t have swimmers their age,” Lea said. “So they got to race against somebody and that was good because it pushed them. I enjoyed watching that.”
And while the more mature Seahorses got test their gait and gallop versus a worthy foe, the younger members of the team nearly wrapped up a season filled with immense progress.
“We started the season off with about 75 percent of my younger kids having their first experience of swim activity and that includes swimming lessons,” Lea said.
For Lea, it’s the drastic level of improvement that many of her swimmers have made throughout the summer that has her impressed.
“So they’ve gone from not wanting to go in the water past their knees to swimming across the pool basically by themselves,” Les said. “So I’m very proud of their improvement.”
