The Register is proud to announce that Yates Center?s Hadley Splechter and Iola?s Elysia Kunkler were voted as May?s Allen County Area Athletes of the Month.
Splechter, a senior track athlete, was nominated by the Register earlier this week along with Humboldt?s Gunner Elder and Tucker Hurst.
Kunkler, a junior track athlete, was nominated along with Crest?s Elka Billings and Marmaton Valley?s Bailey Griffith.
The nominees were put up on the Register?s website to be voted on Tuesday and both athletes came away with more than 50 percent of the vote.
Splechter rounded out his stellar high school career last Saturday at the state track meet winning gold medals in the 800, 1600 and 3200. In all, he?s won 11 gold medals at the state track meet in his career.
Kunkler qualified for three events at the state track meet and came away with a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles and a fifth-place finish in the long jump. She also won those events at the regional meet in Chanute earlier in the month.
Be sure to stay tuned to the Register throughout the month of June for feature stories on Splechter and Kunkler. If you have someone that you believe should be nominated for our June award, please email us at [email protected] or go on to www.iolaregister.com/athletes-month. Include a short paragraph stating what they?ve done throughout the past month to deserve to be nominated along with a picture of them in action if possible.
