HUMBOLDT — With championship races pushed from Friday due to rain, Humboldt Speedway celebrated a tremendous 2018 season in grand fashion by crowning its champions on Sunday evening.
In the evening’s first championship races,  O’Reilly Auto Parts Sport Compacts multiple feature winner Trey Stipp found himself in a dogfight with invaders from the north. Joseph Mick and David Miller, both from St. Joseph, Mo., swapped the lead until Stipp wrestled the lead away with two laps remaining in the A-Feature. Track champion for 2018 was Eric Ikehorn, Humboldt, came in fourth. Humboldt’s Brandon Vink and Curtis Wilson Jr. rounded out the top three in points.
In Home Savings Bank Factory Stocks, Jacob Ellison started on the pole and led every lap en route to the victory. Chanute’s Patrick Kay and Emporia’s Krew Walburn rounded out the top three. The 2018 Track Championship went to Chanute’s Jon Westhoff, who on the year compiled 10 wins. Chanute’s Derrek Wilson finished second in points while Walburn finished third.
The Tumbleweed Music Festival Street Stock Feature saw Brandon Weide lead every lap until Jay Lamons Jr. got by Weide on the final corner to steal the A-Feature. Lamons, with six wins on the year, denied Weide his first victory. The 2018 Track Championship would go to Humboldt’s Nick Fritch, while Scott Lucke and Hunter Oswald settled for second and third.
In Ray’s Metal Depot B Mods, Pittsburg driver Brian McGowen survived a rough and tumble A-Feature which saw several yellow flags and an extended red flag that saw many of the top drivers retiring due to damage.
McGown held off Clint Johnson, Neosho, Mo., and Bonner Spring’s Ethan Isaacs for his first win of the season. Points leader and eventual 2018 Track Champion Cody Jolly, caught up in an early race caution and secured his second championship in as many years. Chanute’s Matthew Kay and Tim Van Gotten completed the top three in points.
In the night’s final Championship race, Tanner Mullens from Wichita outdueled Haysville’s Tyler Davis and Mt. Hope ace Tad Davis.
Mullens, starting inside the third row, jumped into the mix on the first few laps sneaking by the Davises to take the lead. Chanute’s John Allen rallied to get by both Tad and Tyler Davis to finish second. Tyler Davis wound up third.
Mullens garnered the 2018 Track Championship picking up five wins on the year. Tyler Davis and Tad Davis finished second and third respectively.
The final act of the 2018 season was the annual Powder Puff races, with female competitors jumping in race cars for their opportunity to compete. Three separate classes raced with Paige Kidwell in Factory Stocks, Courtney Letterman in B Mods and Miranda Simmons in Sport Compacts.
