Reece Murry

Reece Murry didn’t let anything like an appendectomy slow her down this season.

The Iola High senior missed a good chunk of the middle of the 2022 season after her appendix was removed.

Nevertheless, Murry returned with a vengeance, leading Iola in pitching and hitting.

She went 4-5 with a 2.32 ERA, striking out 71 batters over 66 innings. At the plate, she led Iola with a .345 average, with a team-leading seven doubles. She ranked third in runs scored (10) and second in RBIs (9).

For that, Murry earned honorable mention in Class 4A by Sports in Kansas, which listed its All-State Softball Teams earlier this month.

MURRY was joined by several other area standouts.

Humboldt’s trio of Kirstyn Murrow, Brooklyn Ellis and Emily Ross, also earned honorable mention for Class 3A all-state.

Murrow led Humbodlt with a .586 batting average. She drove in 31, stole 40 bases, smacked six home runs and compiled a 1.030 slugging percentage. She also held a .898 fielding percentage.

Ellis went 11-3 on the mound with a 3.93 ERA. She struck out 68 batters, while walking only 15. She also batted .359.

Ross hit .533 with 28 RBIs, with a .893 slugging percentage.

Two other Lady Cubs, Carsyn Haviland and Karley Wools also earned Pioneer League honors, head coach Brad Piley said.

Haviland hit .493 with 22 RBIs with a .6627 slugging percentage.

Most remarkably, the first baseman was flawless afield, committing no errors  all season.

Wools, meanwhile, hit .486 with one home run and 27 RBIs.

YATES CENTER High’s Morgan Collins netted first-team All-Class 2-1A honors for her work as a utility player and designated hitter for the Wildcats.

Collins went 9-1 on the season, and was unbeaten in TRL play, with a 2.17 ERA. Meanwhile, she batted .644 with 33 hits and 33 RBIs.
