HUMBOLDT — Travis Smith showed the other modified drivers he’s no flash in the pan Friday at the Humboldt Speedway.
Friday’s first regular season night of racing saw Smith pick up his second straight USRA modified feature win.
Smith, who won his first feature race ever in 2013 at Humboldt, spent much of Friday’s McCarthy Auto Group feature chasing John Allen.
The key came as the duo approached lapped traffic. Allen tagged the wall, giving Smith the opening he needed to rocket into the lead.
He held on from there, fending off runner-up Steven Bowers Jr. Jeremy Chambers claimed third, while Payden Phillips and Jon Sheets rounded out the top five.
The Golden Knights Billiards Stock Car feature saw Gary Langworthy record a wire-to-wire victory, edging out Jeremy Wilson. Tyler James was third, David Matlock fourth, and Jason Thurman fifth.
Racing with a heavy heart after the recent death of his uncle, Tyler Kidwell captured the Ray’s Metal Depot/USRA B-Mod feature, dedicating the win to his uncle’s memory. Jimmie Davis recorded a hard-fought second, holding off Andy Bryant. Fourth went to Tim Phillips. Toby Thompson took fifth.
Derrek Wilson made a strong showing, winning the Whitworth Construction Pure Stock main event, despite the best efforts of runner-up Wayne Johnson. Donald McIntosh, Mitch Coulter and Matt Habiger rounded out the top five.
The feature should be a nice primer for this week’s special $1,000 to win Pure Stock feature.
